Biography

Before joining the 91㽶Pharmacy School, Mahfoud Assem, PharmD, PhD was an Associate Professor in the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at South University School of Pharmacy in Columbia, SC. Before then, he was Assistant Professor in the Division of Pharmaceutics and Translational Therapeutics, College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa. During his career, Dr. Assem developed a solid clinical translational research program in the area of Pharmacogenomics of brain tumors and Pharmacogenetics of anticancer drug metabolism. His research interests focus on personalized medicine of glioblastoma, the most frequent type of primary adult brain tumors that affect more than 15,000 individuals each year in the United States with an 80% annual mortality rate. Dr. Assem’s long-term goals are to develop genetic diagnostic strategies and appropriate pharmacogenomics interventions to improve outcomes for patients with brain cancers.

Research Interests

  • Genomics and Pharmacogenomics of Malignant Glioma
  • Genetic and Environmental Regulations of Anticancer Drug Metabolism

My teaching philosophy is derived from the expression, “Give a man a fish, and you have fed him once. Teach him how to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.” My goals are to increase students’ curiosity, knowledge, and critical thinking and to show and encourage them to develop life-long active learning skills to face new challenges and future changes in pharmacy.
