The mission of the Cytopathology fellowship is to provide a climate and foundation for a physician to excel and develop special competence in the diagnosis and evaluation of clinical cytology specimens and to develop an interest in research application of the cytologic method. As such, this one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship provides advanced training in diagnostic Cytopathology and the performance of fine needle aspiration biopsies, including ultrasound-guided FNAs, with strong encouragement to participate in clinical research.

The cytology laboratory examines approximately 60,000 cases annually of which about 6,500 are non-gynecologic. Training includes supervised sign-out, use and interpretation of ancillary tests, and immediate assessment and triaging of needle aspirates, particularly in the busy pancreatic EUS and guided thoracic FNA services. The fellow is exposed to various cytopreparatory techniques throughout the training period, and is expected to occupy the “hot seat” and be the center point of the cytology service. The fellow assumes increased responsibility with time, and participates in multidisciplinary conferences and teaching of pathology residents.

Ancillary clinical resources including flow cytometry, immunochemistry, and molecular diagnostics are available. Clinical and translational research performed under faculty supervision, leading to abstracts and publications, is strongly encouraged. The newly developed translational research facility provides support for research endeavors, and the fellow is expected to take advantage of it. The laboratory is fully computerized allowing for retrieval of specimens for research and teaching.

Requirements

• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Anatomic or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency
• Board eligible or certified in Anatomic Pathology
• Must have or be eligible to apply for a Wisconsin Medical License
