The overall emphasis of Dr. Zhang’s research is to understand signaling mechanisms in regulation of blood vessel reactivity and homeostasis under normal states as well as in diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension, and diabetes. The current research is focused on the vascular regulation by ion channels such as transient receptor potential (TRP) channels and K+ channels.

My current research is focused on understanding the transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 channels to angiotensin II-induced impairment of vasodilation in animals and humans. I am also interested in the role of vascular smooth muscle potassium channels in hydrogen peroxide-induced vasodilation in human arterioles, in health and disease.

My current research is focused on determining whether arachidonic acid (AA) serves as a key upstream mediator of flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in human coronary arteriole (HCA) and define the molecular mechanisms by which AA activates the transient receptor potential vallinoid type 4 (TRPV4) channel in coronary endothelial cells.

My current research is focused on characterizing the function of smooth muscle TRPV1 ion channels in controlling the diameter of small blood vessels and whether they contribute to the vasoconstriction response elicited by physiological vasoconstrictors such as endothelin-1.
